Possible side effects of Flagyl

Two serious side effects that have occurred with Flagyl are seizures and numbness or tingling in the arms, legs, hands, and feet. If you experience either of these symptoms, stop taking the medication and call your doctor immediately.

  • More common side effects may include:
    Abdominal cramps, constipation, diarrhea, headache, loss of appetite, nausea, upset stomach, vomiting

Appetite loss; constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; headache; metallic taste; nausea; stomach upset; vomiting.

Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur:

Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); bloody stools; increased or decreased urination; numbness, tingling, or burning of your arms, hands, legs, or feet; seizures; severe diarrhea; sore throat, chills, or fever; stomach pain or cramps; vaginal itching, odor, or discharge; white patches in the mouth.

Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects:
  • seizures (convulsions);

  • fever, chills, body aches, sore throat, flu symptoms;

  • numbness or tingling in your hands or feet;

  • white patches or sores inside your mouth or on your lips;

  • pain or burning when you urinate; or

  • diarrhea that is watery or bloody.

Less serious side effects may include:

  • nausea, stomach pain, diarrhea;

  • headache, dizziness, loss of balance;

  • vaginal itching or discharge;

  • dry mouth or unpleasant metallic taste;

  • cough, sneezing, runny or stuffy nose; or

  • swollen or sore tongue.

This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect.

Along with its needed effects, a medicine may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor immediately if any of the following side effects occur:

Less common

Numbness, tingling, pain, or weakness in hands or feet

Rare

Convulsions (seizures)

Also, check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur:

Less common

Any vaginal irritation, discharge, or dryness not present before use of this medicine; black, tarry stools; blood in urine or stools; clumsiness or unsteadiness; frequent or painful urination; inability to control urine flow; mood or other mental changes; nausea and vomiting; pinpoint red spots on skin; sense of pelvic pressure; skin rash, hives, redness, or itching; sore throat and fever; stomach and back pain (severe); unusual bleeding or bruising

For injection form

Pain, tenderness, redness, or swelling over vein in which the medicine is given

Other side effects may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. However, check with your doctor if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome:

More common

Diarrhea; dizziness or light-headedness; headache; loss of appetite; nausea or vomiting; stomach pain or cramps

Less common or rare

Change in taste sensation; dryness of mouth; unpleasant or sharp metallic taste

In some patients metronidazole may cause dark urine. This is only temporary and will go away when you stop taking this medicine.

Other side effects not listed above may also occur in some patients. If you notice any other effects, check with your doctor.
